A young widow traveling with her small son should be a sweetly sentimental sight, but Susan Brooks was different. Legally widowed by the state of New York which sent her husband, Roberto Torrenti, to the electric chair for robbery and murder, she was traveling to Taormina, Sicily, at the insistence of her father-in-law. Her late husband had supposedly double-crossed his associates in disposing of the money, and when Susan arrived in Sicily, Torrenti, senior, greeted her with the demand, "Where is it?" She certainly did not know where the money was, but many people thought she did. She was caught between two factions, neither of which would stop at murder, and both of which threatened touse the child as a lever to extract information she did not have.
